Dear Editor,

Talk about sleeping with the Devil, that's us and China. While it's
true, any time I talk to a kid or teenager or their parents, I tell them
they ought to learn to speak Mandarin Chinese, saying "China is the
future of the world," I never said it's going to be a great and
wonderful future where everything we hold dear has any meaning at all.

China has everything going for it to assist its ascendancy. Number
one, the money we pay them that makes them very rich. Then, they have
the great advantage of having no enemies that they have to worry about
and spend their money trying to protect themselves from.

Among the things that China doesn't have to concern itself with is
playing a positive role in the world, such as in their relations with
countries like Zimbabwe, whose relationship with them is so close that
Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe wants all of his people to learn to
speak Mandarin. Far be it from China to try to influence Zimbabwe not
to do things like destroy the homes of 700,000 people without first
making sure that alternate accommodations are available.

As far as countries go, I myself would feel a lot more comfortable if we
were spreading our wealth between India and the many other countries
that have plenty of cheap labor. Someday, we're all going to be
reporting to China.

Thank you, John Vehon
